The UniversalRuntimeException (URE) is one of the fundamental objects that any developer working with the RSFUtil (or indeed PonderUtilCore[1]) source cannot avoid bumping into quite quickly. |

general movement to make most if not all exceptions runtime exceptions (by [not only |
me|http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?CheckedExceptionsConsideredHarmful][2]!), since exception specifications often add verbosity without facility. |

Checked exceptions are most appropriate for signalling problems between |
libraries with a wide degree of separation. Within a single body of code, |
unchecked exceptions should be used to propagate error conditions to the next |
boundary. |

This class has a useful (and growing) body of schemes for absorbing the |
target exceptions from other types of wrapping exceptions and rewrapping |
them. |
|
What we wish to preserve is a) the ultimate stack trace from the cause of the |
problem and b) a set of increasingly detailed messages that can be accreted |
onto the exception as it winds up the stack. |
|
A UniversalRuntimeException also contains a Class representing its |
"category", a point in the inheritance hierarchy that may be used to classify |
the nature of exceptions, as being distinct from the wrapped target exception |
intended to record its cause. An object of the category need not ever be |
created, the inheritance hierachy may be queried via {{Class.isAssignableFrom()}}. |

The exception category defaults to the concrete class of the exception being |
wrapped. |

This ensures that only ONE exception trace will ever appear even in very complex scenarios, and it will be the exception of the VERY FIRST "root cause" exception. |

# You do not invoke the constructor of the URE, only the static {{accumulate()}} method. This avoid unnecessary object creation, since (as will increasingly be the case in a large body of URE-compliant code), the exception will most likely ''already'' be a URE, and the wrapping code will detect this and simply return the same object from the accumulate method. |
# You have the opportunity to add some edifying annotation (hence the name {{accumulate}}) to the exception's message, summarising the knowledge you have at this stack level about the context or likely cause of the exception. URE messages can prove startlingly edifying at the bottom of a long chain of catchers, often explaining the total context of the problem with eerie lucidity. Always try to add as much context as you can in these accumulate blocks - you probably know at least something relevant - but do not duplicate information likely to already be known by your callee. |

!! Ultimate catching |
Eventually, sometimes a very long way away, someone will want to catch an exception who actually has the facility to take some intelligent action on it. I tend to find there are very few such points in an application, usually concentrated in a layer just below the top. In this case they may expose the wrapped exception to the full battery of analysis by recovering it using the {{getTargetException()}} method. |

Not only is this enormously detrimental to code clarity, it is also entirely unhelpful to calling code. There are many equally worthless variations on this theme, of various degrees of blameworthiness, and it is startlingly hard to easily write a catch block in Java that is both readable and responsible. |

Replace your {{try..catch}} blocks with the standard block above which uses ''throw UniversalRuntimeException'', and the URE will ensure that: |

Note that [Spring|http://www.springframework.org/about] (check "Mission Statement") itself has long adopted a policy of the removal of all checked exceptions as being grossly inconsistent with a dependency-free bean environment - the URE merely extends this to its maximum level of convenience. |

This is also one of the major purposes of [PrintOutputStream]. Check in PonderUtilCore before you write any URE-wrapping code that it isn't already there.\\ |

[#4] How many times, browsing through Tomcat logs, have you seen the same enormous exception trace reproduced 3 or even more times, each time with just a bit more stack trace stuck on it? Of course it is always the ''worthless'' part of the stack trace that is reproduced the greatest number of times, and more often than not some idiot near the top of the chain has trampled on the valuable bit... |
